Flaming Fords!

I was recently at a business dinner meeting and while we were sitting there discussing some of the challenges of our industry a vehicle burst into flames in the parking garage outside the Café. Those around the table quickly called 911 and then began taking odds on it being a Ford pickup truck.

Sure enough, once we were able to get close enough to inspect the vehicle it was an early 2000's Ford F150. We all noticed that when the flames first appeared they came from under the hood directly in front of the driver's seat. This is typical of the fires linked to the largest recall ever made by Ford.

In February of 2008 Ford recalled 12 million of its cars and light trucks for a defect in the cruise control switch that had, at that time, been linked to more than 60 fires. Some of these fires resulted in the loss not only of the truck or car, but of the house where it was parked, or other cars around it.

In November the NTSB issued a second recall because so few of the vehicle owners had responded to the first release.
In a very unscientific and unofficial survey I looked under the hood of Ford pick ups coming into our shop, three of them still had the old style switch and connector on them.

If you own a vehicle listed in the recall PLEASE check to see if the recall repair has been done. They can catch on fire anytime and anyplace; at school, at work, in your garage at home or even while in our shop being repaired.

On another note Ford has issued a new recall on truck fires, but this time they don't even get off the assembly line before some of them self-ignite. \
There was a problem in the soldering of one of the computers under the dash that caused a short starting a fire.

A little more than 14,000 2011 F150 pick ups are impacted by this recall.

Ford Recalls

If you own a Ford product and do not know if the recall affects your vehicle or if the service has been done to it call the shop or stop by and let us look under the hood for you. A few minutes may save a lot of grief later.

Just so you know, I would still buy a Ford.

What is a Cabin Air Filter?

In recent years many car makers have started including a filter in the air conditioning system much like the ones in your home. These are folded paper filters that trap dirt, pollen and mold spores as they circulate through the car’s a/c system.

Most car owners are not familiar with the cabin air filter and it is seldom replaced as it should be. When a cabin air filter becomes dirty it begins to restrict the air flow in the system and reduces the cooling efficiency of the air conditioning.

When working properly these cabin filters greatly reduce contaminants circulating inside the car. For those of us suffering from allergies it can make it big difference. When the a/c is operated in the re-circulate (max)  mode the filter will remove the great majority of pollen and mold trapped in the enclosed car cabin. If you spend a lot of time in your car, this one feature can make life better.

Ask your mechanic to check your cabin air filter at your next service.

Signed up for 2 more years!

My brother Allan and I started doing the The Car Counselor Radio Show in 2004 and at that time we didn't really expect it to last much more than the first year. A couple of years ago, after the passing of Allan, my son Jim started to work with us on the air.

One of the things that make the show so successful is the great sponsors we have. All of the independent shops working with the show provide a very high standard of service and integrity. They make us look good!

If you have any suggestions or comments about how we should change the show to make it better and more interesting let us know. It is you who make it all possible by tuning in each week.

Thanks to all of you for your support
